 h1. Dear readers,

Did you realize on about January 2nd that your favorite jeans were a little snug? Mine were. All of that holiday cheer went to work on this waistline — and waistlines everywhere. So I'm taking the rest of January to eat a little more … thoughtfully.

I don't do diet regimens very well. I am intrigued by intermittent fasting, but my close friend, who's adopted it as a weight loss strategy (and who looks great, by the way), reminds me that I get "peckish" when I don't eat.

So for now I'll just be cutting back.

Here are 10 dishes — many of them lighter than usual and many of them soups — that I'll be eating this month: Carrie Floyd's Potato-Kale Soup; Deborah Madison's Farro and Chickpea Soup; Matthew Amster-Burton's Slow-Cooked Broccoli with Soy Sauce; Cindy Burke's Breakfast Salad; Matthew Card's Chickpea Dal with Mustard Greens and Tomato; Shoshanna Cohen's Cultural Mongrel Cabbage Slaw; Jim Dixon's Braised Cabbage and Onion with Poached Egg; Meera S.T. Vargo's Spiced French Green Lentil Soup; Bryant Terry's Creole Hoppin' Jean; and Katherine Deumling's Red Lentil and Winter Squash Dal.

They sound delicious, no? It's nice to know that cutting back doesn't have to be dull.
