Late last year, the state of California approved the use of methyl iodide, a toxic fumigant used on strawberries, as a replacement for the ozone-depleting methyl bromide. A lawsuit challenging the approval was promptly filed, and now both the state of California and the Environmental Protection Agency are reviewing the situation. In the meantime, the chemical may not be as popular in the fields as anticipated.
