Strawberry fields forever?

The state of California recently announced that it was considering approving the use of methyl iodide, a toxic fumigant, on strawberry crops. The ensuing outcry over the proposal has raised numerous issues, including the chemical's possible effects on agricultural workers, people living near strawberry farms, and groundwater. 

Why the new chemical in the first place? Because California is phasing out methyl bromide, a fumigant that's done damage to the planet's ozone layer.
