Blog for Food

Rather than the usual chattiness, I'm getting down to business with this post.

With Oregon's unemployment rate at over 10% and rising, many Oregon families are experiencing what it's like to have to choose between paying the rent and eating. Children are going to bed hungry, parents are not eating so their portion can go to the kids and seniors are having to decide between food and medicine.

So rather than skimming the facts and going to the next story because it's just too depressing, I'm joining with 40 other Oregon bloggers during the month of February to raise money for the Oregon Food Bank. It can be any amount; we're simply asking our readers to donate whatever amount they can.

And when you do, please enter "Blog for Food" in the "Tribute Gift in honor of" space on the donation form so we track how it's going and report back. We're hoping to raise at least $5,000 and we're counting on you. Yes, you.

As President Obama said in his inaugural address, "What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility—a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world; duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task."

Now is as good a time as any to get started.
