Served on a plate with other durable holiday sweets — frosted cookies, gingerbread men, and the like — these rum balls were and are a boozy favorite at my family's annual Christmas Day dinner.

They are unapologetically mid-century retro, conjuring up images of appetizers skewered with toothpicks and highball cocktails. And, yes, they are held together by the magic of crushed Nilla wafers. But they require absolutely no cooking, and once served, they disappear, pronto.
