 h1. Dear readers,

The production of food is inexorably entwined with environmental impacts and politics. Food activist and writer [/articles/theculinateinterview/annalappé "Anna Lappe"] has worked tirelessly for years to spread the word about the connections between food and challenges to our environment. One of her latest projects is the Real Food Media Project, a film contest in which all of the entries were four minutes long or less. You can see the ten finalists over on the RFMP site — and take inspiration from their stories of family pig farmers, beekeepers, berry-pickers, seed savers, and more. You vote for only one favorite, but all of the films are worth the few minutes it takes to see them.

If you have a little more time and want to read fantastic in-depth journalism on the same kinds of topics, check out the work being done over at FERN, the Food and Environment Reporting Network. Although you may have seen or heard some of the work FERN has helped produce in print or on the radio, you may not know that Barry Estabrook's story about antibiotics in the food system, published last summer in Eating Well and produced by FERN, has been nominated for an IACP journalism award.
