This past summer, the Oregon legislature allocated more than $1 million to encourage local food in state schools. As the blog Civil Eats noted, Oregon's not alone in the local-lunch effort; there are farm-to-school programs in every state, in fact, affecting the diets and food education of nearly 6 million students. Given that there are some 50 million K-12 students in the U.S., however, that means that only about 12 percent of the nation's students are benefiting from these programs. And, as Civil Eats added, the state of Texas has been busy ensuring that junk food stays in its schools. Don't mess with Texas.
