Know a novice college student heading off to academe right about now? Not sure what to get as a going-away present? Consider the cookbook. There are two types aimed at the young and inexperienced: cooking guides (and blogs) catering specifically to college students, and basic books aimed at anyone wanting to get into the kitchen. Good examples of the latter, of course, include anything by Mark Bittman (How to Cook Everything The Basics) and the Joy of Cooking series (such as The Best-Loved and Brand-New Joy of Cooking). Ina Garten's Barefoot Contessa series (Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics) also fits the bill, as does In the Small Kitchen. Mollie Katzen, however, does it all. She's got a gorgeous new book out, The Heart of the Plate, that's the latest in her series of vegetarian cookbooks. And a few years ago, she put together Get Cooking, a simple book aimed at encouraging the totally inexperienced to embrace the kitchen — and stick around once they're there.
