 h1. Dear readers,

This week, we're happy to introduce Cooking Basics, a new iPad app in Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything series. Based on the book How to Cook Everything The Basics, Cooking Basics is more than a collection of great recipes (although it is indeed that). With 1,000 photos covering hundreds of skills and techniques — along with a classes section that expands on select recipes — it's a visual, mobile, self-directed cooking school. After spending time with this app “you will be cooking great food for life,” as Mark says in the introductory video. We here at Culinate have worked hard to put together this app, and we hope you'll check it out.

Second, we're so pleased that Deborah Madison is in Portland for a few days this week, on tour for her new book Vegetable Literacy. On Sunday, April 28, at 3 p.m., she and I will be on hand at Broadway Books. Margarett Waterbury, an employee of Gathering Together Farm, will contribute some seasonal produce — both usual and unusual spring fare — that Deborah will help us all learn to cook. If you're a local or in town for the weekend, please come by and say hello!
