So long, Ding Dongs

(article, Culinate staff)

Stunning, but true: Hostess, the venerable maker of such synthetic snack cakes as Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes, and Ding Dongs, has gone out of business. Enterprising marketers are already hawking hoarded snacks online, while the company considers bids from competitors for its iconic brands.

But, as Associated Press food editor J.M. Hirsch wrote, our taste for trash has waned overall, and for good reason: "From a culinary standpoint and from a nutritional standpoint, it's hard to love the Twinkie (or pretty much any Hostess product)." Instead, Hirsch celebrates the trend of concocting homemade versions of the chemical Hostess ideal — a trend so popular, apparently, that in 2014, Clarkson Potter will publish an entire cookbook devoted to DIY versions. Chomp on that.
