Basic Bruschetta

(recipe, Margarett Waterbury)

Introduction

True bruschetta is nothing more than this: thin slices of bread brushed with olive oil, grilled or toasted till lightly crisp, then rubbed with raw garlic. You can add many other toppings (and indeed, nearly everyone will expect toppings), but this is the base.

Ingredients

  1. 1 loaf Italian bread or baguette, thinly sliced
  2. Olive oil
  3. 1 garlic clove, sliced in half

Steps

  1. Brush the bread slices with olive oil, then grill the bread over coals or toast it in a 350-degree oven for 3 to 5 minutes until it is crisp but not dark. (Cooking time varies widely by oven, so keep an eye on them.) Rub one side of each slice with the cut clove of garlic, then set aside for serving.
