Way back in January 2011, President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), aiming to make the nation's food supply more reliable. But as the Washington Post recently noted, the act has yet to be put in place — and people are still falling sick as much as ever. The blog Food Safety News noted that the national Microbiological Data Program, which randomly tests food for pathogens, has been extended through the end of 2012 — although it might disappear after then. Frustrated, the Make Our Food Safe campaign is busy trying to harass Obama into actually implementing the FSMA. And for a chilling graphic, check out Pew Health's map of food-borne outbreaks in the past 18 months.
