Dear readers, Obviously, we at Culinate are fans of essays about food, so it's no surprise that we're fans of Man with a Pan, John Donohue's collection of more than 20 essays by writers who cook — and who happen to be men. Contributors include Mark Bittman, Mark Kurlansky, and Stephen King, all of whom include a recipe or two and a list of cookbooks they use. My favorite sentiment may be from the gourmand Jim Harrison, who encourages us to get comfortable cooking: "Glue yourself to any fine cook you meet. They'll generally put up with you if you bring good wine. Don't be a tightwad. Your meals in life are numbered and the number is diminishing. Get at it." On Culinate this week, we're featuring an excerpt from Man with a Pan: Jesse Sheidlower's essay that explains his "sexually transmitted eating disorder." (And if that essay resonates, you might click over to A.G. Sulzberger's piece in today's New York Times — about the challenges of eating vegetarian in Kansas City.) Finally, we're giving away a copy of Man with a Pan. Leave a comment on Sheidlower's essay by Friday at noon (PT). We'll choose one commenter as the winner.
