 h1. Dear readers,

Today, a plate of snacks: First, if you haven't checked out Shoshanna Cohen's glance back at her vegan punk days, I urge you to take a look. The intersection of food, music, and — yes — parties in her early 20s make for a good read. Zine-inspired recipes, anyone?

Second, fans of Southern cooking will want to join Kim O'Donnel tomorrow (Thursday, October 6) for her live online chat with three Southern food experts. Virginia Willis, author of Bon Appétit, Y'all; Adrian Miller, a culinary historian who's working on a history of soul food; and Sandra Gutierrez, who has just released her new book, The New Southern-Latino Table, will all be on hand to answer your burning Southern food questions. (Like, for example, where does one go for the best barbecue?)

Finally, fall is the perfect time for a cooking class — here's a shout out to cooking teachers everywhere. Their work is important and inspiring! Last night I took a jam-making class myself — taught by the energetic Marisa McClellan — and it was pure pleasure. The two hours a dozen of us spent cooking was fun and informative. And now I know exactly what I'm making for holiday gifts.
