Even if you follow Harriet Fasenfest's efforts in the urban-homesteading movement, you probably still think that the DIY lifestyle is only for frumpy hippies stuck in the city. And the recent demise of ReadyMade, the magazine bible of the edgy DIY set, could be interpreted to mean that chic and homemade just don't go together. Not so, declares the New York Times, which recently profiled one Los Angeles couple's commitment to living sustainably and stylishly. The food Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen make has to taste and look good; the harvest they reap from their garden is stashed prettily, as the accompanying slideshow demonstrates. And the couple tries to think small, not large: bq. Where you get your food and how you clean your home has always been about something more . . . The question is, “What kind of person do you want to be?” Ms. Coyne wouldn’t disagree. She doesn’t care to fret about national politics, peak oil or the coming zombie apocalypse. “Within our control,” she said, “is what goes in the house, in the backyard, in the neighborhood.” Finally, if you come across a paper copy of the June Sunset magazine — an issue devoted entirely to food, by the way — you might peruse Shoshana Berger's story about the radical homemakers Casey and Angela Baker, who (like Fasenfest) live in Portland, Oregon. But nope, you can't read it online.
