 h1. Dear readers,

 How much time do you spend thinking about food? 

 Me, I think about it constantly. I think about shopping for food or cooking it. I worry that I'm eating too much of one thing (hello, sugar) or too little of another (vegetables, mostly). I agonize over industrial agriculture and how much meat we eat; I get nostalgic about foods from my past. I plan dinners that I hope will delight my family and friends; I rebel and insist I'm not going to cook tonight. Yesterday I was chewing on the possibility of joining a CSA this year versus sticking with my farmers' market routine. (See, I can't even escape food metaphors.)

 But I spend relatively little time simply being grateful for my food. Reading lately about food scarcity around the world and the very immediate food shortages in Japan has made me pause. Today, where I live, food is bountiful and beautiful; like you perhaps, I can purchase a stupefying array of foods — local items and foods from afar — at any number of markets within a few miles of my home. 

 In a minute, I'll make an egg salad sandwich for lunch. But before I do, here's a very public thank-you to the bakers at Ken's, whose bread I will slice; to the mustard-makers, whose Dijon adds zest; to the farmer, who grows the red-leafed lettuce; and to Lucy and Lucinda, who see that we receive a weekly delivery of fresh eggs from chickens who are well-tended.

 We can savor it, but we can't take any of it for granted.
