It's August, which means that most home gardeners are now or will soon be burdened with bushels of tomatoes, corn, and zucchini. But there's only so many loaves of zucchini bread the average gardener can stomach. Which is why today (August 8) is National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night. Yup, you're supposed to pile your surplus harvest into paper bags and leave it for your unsuspecting neighbors. Who knows? Maybe they'll be thrilled. August, it turns out, is a zucchini-bagful of quirky food holidays. August 5 was National Mustard Day, and August 19 is National Potato Day. Creamsicles get their own day (August 14), as do cherry Popsicles (August 26). And in the true camping spirit, August 10 is National S’mores Day, while August 30 is Toasted Marshmallow Day. Wrapping up the sugary holidays is August 21, dedicated to the multihued ice cream known as spumoni. It's good to know the feds are making sure we keep our food priorities straight.
