Considering the pros and cons of keeping chickens in an urban environment? Then read Elizabeth Giddens' hilarious recent memoir of how hens became a focal point for a community in New York City — especially after one of the birds was nabbed. As she recounted in the New York Times,

bq. No information was forthcoming. Either no one knew or no one was talking. But one of the corner guys promised to “put the word out” and, if he found out who did it, to “put the hurt on him.” Which was comforting. Kind of. 

And then, remarkably, Gertrude the hen was returned to her owners, alive and well. No word, though, on how her captors managed to care for her during her week-long absence.
