Greek Salad Variations

Known as the traditional horiatiki, Greek Salad usually contains the combination of the freshest vegetables and herbs. Making Greek Salad may be the simplest and healthiest way to prepare. But despite the simplest preparations, it is known to have the best flavors infused in every single bite. 

Some people think that they need to place the authentic ingredients needed to achieve the right blend. But actually, you can use the additional ingredients from your refrigerator for this recipe, as well. You can add lettuce leaves, chopped parsley, cucumbers, and capers to this Greek salad recipe.

Ingredients:

1 romaine lettuce
1 red onion, sliced
1 cup of pitted black olives
2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 cup shredded feta cheese

Procedure: 

Wash and separate the lettuce leaves. Place these in a large bowl and include other ingredients. Add the dressing of your choice and toss. You can place a plastic wrap on top and keep refrigerated or chilled before serving.

There are many ways that you can enjoy this salad. But the authentic way is the use of a simple dressing. You can whisk together ¼ cup of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, ¼ cup of lemon juice or vinegar, and ground black pepper.

Another dressing that you can use is a vinaigrette that would taste great with the salad. Although it is made up of quite a number of ingredients, the taste it achieves best exemplifies Greek cuisine.

Vinaigrette ingredients:

¼ cup olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
2 teaspoons of lemon juice
¼ cup of red wine vinegar

Simply place all these ingredients in a bowl and mix together with a whisk. You can also place all these in a jar and shake it vigorously. 

By putting the dressing in a jar, you can serve the dressing separately making the person eating add dressing depending on their preference. You can keep the excess dressing in your refrigerator for several days allowing you to enjoy more yummy Greek salad all throughout the week.
