 h1. Dear readers,
 A few years ago, on a business-related trip to New York, my colleague Mark and I met up with our designer and one of our [/articles/features/vegetableoils?utmsource=NL20100224&utmmedium=email&utmcontent=vegetableoils&utmcampaign=ArtofEatingIn writers], plus a few friendly bloggers for, if I remember correctly, too-sweet margaritas and soggy nachos at a nondescript bar in Murray Hill. It was a fun, boisterous get-together, but one of the things I enjoyed most was hearing about Cathy Erway's blog, Not Eating Out in New York.

 Cathy had made a pledge to forgo eating out — in the eating-out capital of the United States. I don't even think she nibbled a chip that night (although I'm not sure about the margarita). 

 As it turned out, Cathy didn't eat out in New York for two years, and that experience not only informed her blog; it also informed her new book by the same name.
