Market News January 12 2010 Market

(post, Lloyd Farmers' Market)

RedTree Farm is back this week. They don’t have enough produce to bring to market yet but they will have their goats milk soaps. Bigfoot Bread, Osmogaia and Packer Orchards all return this week too.

There should be a decent supply of produce this week. Greens will be low but you should still find spinach, kale, collards and arugula. Other vegetables include carrots, beets, kohlrabi, turnips, radishes, potatoes, onions and winter squash. You will also find a nice selection of apples, pears and asian pears plus hazelnuts and chestnuts.

Here’s the expected availability list:

Rick Steffen Farm – onions, shallots, potatoes, carrots, beets, spinach and turnips.

Packer Orchards – pear juice sweetened baked goods and jams, pears, apples, asian pears.

Greenville Farms – prunes, hazelnuts, eggs and jams.

Osmogaia – mustard greens (maybe), kale (several varieties), chard, tatsoi, bok choy, cabbage, winter squash, daikon, radishes, winter squash.

Nature’s Choices – fresh mushrooms (wild and cultivated), dried mushrooms, mushroom salt, honey, chestnuts, huckleberry jam

Bigfoot Bread – toasting bread, pitas & flatbreads, cinnamon rolls.

Fressen Artisan Bakery – German and Austrian breads and pastries.

Savory et Sweet - crepes, salads, drinks. Menu Available Later Today

A few shoppers asked how to use kohlrabi last week. Kohlrabi is a brassica (cabbage, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, etc) and has a mild broccoli flavor. It can be eaten raw or cooked. The greens can eaten and are very tasty. Ivy Manning has a few recipes posted here on Culinate. I’ve added her recipes to our featured recipes above.

See you at the market!
