Dear readers, A few weeks ago, Deborah Madison wrote to us about [/columns/deborah/aseriouspotluck?utmsource=NL20091004&utmmedium=email&utmcontent=Impromptupotluck&utmcampaign=Socialtime "an impromptu potluck"] she'd had with a few friends. (Well, maybe it wasn't so impromptu; someone made Julie Child's beef bourguignon, which takes hours to cook.) Here's a little of what Deborah said about the evening: "My neighbors — three of them — and two of us had dinner together the other night, because we all needed cheering. I took special care setting the table, pulling out big white linen napkins, using the best wine glasses, and the non-dishwasher dishes, as if it were Saturday night, not a Monday." I appreciated this piece for a couple of reasons. First, Deborah and her friends felt glum and so they did what they knew would gladden them: gather around the table to eat some good food. Second, they did it on a Monday! Too often we relegate social time around the table to weekends — but sometimes pulling out the stops with a fancy dinner at home during the week is a wonderfully jarring thing. In fact, it [/columns/kitchenlimbo/thehostesswiththeleastest?utmsource=NL20091004&utmmedium=email&utmcontent=thehostess&utmcampaign=Socialtime "doesn't even need to be fancy"] to be celebratory. Here's to gathering together during the long wintry evenings ahead.
