Bye bye, fishies

(article, Culinate staff)

More and more, it seems that you just can't have your fish and eat it, too. The New York Times recently reported on the latest wild fish to head towards overfishing status, a weird-looking specimen called the hoki. OK, so maybe you think you'll eat farmed fish instead? Well, as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences just announced, half of the fish consumed globally is now raised on farms — and those farmed fish are raised by dining on massive quantities of wild fish, further stressing wild-fish populations. Finally, the Pew Environment Group recently came out against the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) decision to allow open-ocean aquaculture in the Gulf of Mexico, calling it "a recipe for disaster."
