Safety vs. small farms?

Want your food to be safer? Want it to come from sustainable small farms? According to the nonprofit Cornucopia Institute, a set of federal rules aiming at the former are making things tough for the latter. California's Leafy Green Marketing Agreement, created in the wake of the E. coli-laced spinach catastrophe of 2006, may soon go nationwide, forcing all greens farmers to follow tougher guidelines for crop safety. 

What's wrong with stricter food-safety rules? Well, small farmers have a harder time keeping up with the expense and the labor of staying compliant, and the rules may be at odds with biodiversity. Find out more at one of the several hearings the USDA has scheduled around the country this fall.
