"You're catering your OWN Birthday party"?

(post, David Silva)

The title says it all. Grandma just couldn't believe it. My family L-O-V-E-S to gossip, but they especially love to throw in their opinion. Always. I got the call in mere seconds: " You're mother JUST told me you are cooking food for 18 people from SCRATCH? Isn't the point of having a birthday party for someone else to cook for YOU? That makes NO sense. I just don't understand you, David".

Well, like everyone else on Culinate, I get extreme pleasure out of cooking. Grandma might not understand that cooking is a joy for me, and perhaps the best present I could have given to myself. It is a chance to be creative, enjoy whatever music catches my fancy, and just relax. Normally, pitting oil cured olives is a chore. But not when the sun is coming through your kitchen, there is a breeze, and you're being serenaded with itunes. Not bad for a day off of work.

The menu was a inspired by the treats of summer: Tomatoes, Melon, Cucumbers ... check it out: Hummus, Artichoke-White Bean Dip, Roasted Red Pepper-Almond Dip, Spicy Carrot Salad, Watermelon-Feta-Mint Salad, Guava-Cheese Crackers, and individual-sized Gazpacho cups with saltwater-parsley ice cubes.

My talents continue to remain in the savory department. Thus, I left dessert to the pros: Two of my best friends who's talent in the sugar department remains unsurpassed.

It was a great time in the kitchen, though I quickly forget how time consuming gazpacho can be. The ice cubes were a last minute idea, and I really wish Martha Stewart could have been there when the lightbulb in my head went off. I would hope that she would have patted me on the back. Either way, a good time was had by all, and I couldn't have asked for a better birthday. It was way more rewarding for people to mingle in an apartment with food and wine then for 18 people to take over an already crowded bar. If any of the attendees are reading this post, thank you for coming! And to those I owe my sugar rush, 29 couldn't have been tastier. Thank you for the sweet treats!
