Hot Toddy

In the height of winter, when there's a lot of citrus to choose from, I like playing around with different combinations: Meyer lemons, clementines, blood oranges. For the right balance of tart and sweet, keep the proportions at roughly 2 parts orange/tangerine juice to 1 part lemon/lime juice.


  1. ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon and/or lime juice
  2. ½ cup freshly squeezed orange and/or tangerine juice
  3. 1 tsp. honey
  4. 1 shot bourbon, Scotch, or brandy
  5. Hot water


  1. In each snifter or tumbler, combine the citrus juices with the honey and bourbon. Add enough just-boiled hot water to fill the glass not quite to the top. Stir and serve.


Given all the fresh juice in this drink, it doesn't stay hot for very long. If you prefer a hotter drink, first warm the juices briefly in the microwave.
