The New York Times Magazine for October 12 is all about food — and with a cover picture (depending on the edition) of an exploding ear of corn, an exploding apple, or an exploding pumpkin, it's definitely not about food porn. Titled "Food Fights," the theme issue features a lengthy article by Michael Pollan on food policy in the next administration; an essay by Mark Bittman on why and how food has begun to matter more to the average American; an interview with documentary filmmaker Robert Kenner, whose new film '"Food takes a hard look at agribusiness; a column by William Safire on locavorism; and a slideshow about food activists. Last but not least: Doug Fine's response to an August hailstorm that dashed his hope for a winter of home-grown spaghetti sauce.
